Virtual Power Plant was awarded in the “Fast Track” programme organized by the National Centre for Research and Development, and received funding to conduct research and development within the framework of the project “oBEMS (Office Building Energy Management System) intelligent hardware and software overlay for office building automation systems, new method of managing comfort, electricity and heat which optimizes ventilation, heat and air conditioning (HVAC) in real time with the use of multisensory map of comfort”.
HVAC systems account for over 50% of the cost of energy used in European office buildings. Normally, control of these systems is not continually adjusted to the variable occupancy of buildings, resulting in a lack of appropriate levels of comfort and the unsustainable consumption of electricity and heat.
oBEMS is a optimizer (hardware and software) for ventilation systems with a function of maintaining the required level of comfort and the reduction of expenditure on electricity and heat. Innovation results from a combination of the current management of indoor climate in office buildings using multisensory maps of comfort and low-invasive methods of integration with BMS (Building Management System). So far, such connection was only theoretical – due to high costs of integrating BMS with additional sensors necessary for the ongoing management of comfort.
Implementation of the project in the Poland can significantly reduce demand for electricity in the hours of peak demand. oBEMS is an extension for the office buildings of an already developed by VPPlant Enabler DSR application, which was co-funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) in BRIdge Alfa programme.
By starting work a few months ago on the proposal for the NCBiR competition we asked ourselves a few questions: “How to control the forced ventilation in conjunction with the current load, multi-dimensional map of comfort in the modern office?” and “what could be the potential to achieve savings in holistic approach for management of office buildings?” – Grzegorz Nowaczewski explains the origins of the project.
VPPlant invited best Polish experts to design the system. As part of its implementation, VPPlant will cooperate with Laboratory of Process Automation of University of Science and Technology in Krakow (AGH). Head of the Scientific Council of the project will be prof. Assoc. Eng. Grzegorz Mikulik from the Department of Engineering Management at the Faculty of Management at AGH.
The target market for oBEMS are modern office buildings located in major Polish agglomerations with working HVAC systems managed by the building automation systems.
Work on oBEMS started in July 2016.
